MTO / Service Ontario Vehicle Appraisal

Registration & ownership transfer support

When you register a used vehicle or transfer ownership in Ontario, the amount of Retail Sales Tax (RST) you pay is generally based on the vehicle's average wholesale value from the province's price guide, or your purchase price — whichever is higher. An independent appraisal becomes important when that guide value doesn't reflect reality: the vehicle is a gift between people who aren't immediate family, it's not listed in the guide at all, or it's genuinely worth less because of high mileage or damage.

Get Appraisal prepares independent vehicle appraisal reports for exactly these situations, so you're not stuck paying tax on a number that doesn't match your vehicle's real condition.

When you need this appraisal

  • The vehicle isn't listed in Ontario's average wholesale price guide — common with antiques, replicas, kit cars, heavily modified vehicles, and rare imports.
  • The vehicle is a gift transfer between people who are not immediate family members, where the value still needs to be documented for RST purposes.
  • The vehicle is excessively used or has sustained significant damage, and its real condition puts it well below the guide's average wholesale value (this option generally applies where that guide value is over $1,000).
  • You're registering a vehicle previously purchased or registered out of province and need documented, independent support for its declared value.
  • You want to dispute or support a value being questioned during registration.

What's included

  • VIN decode and vehicle specification confirmation
  • Condition assessment based on the photos and details you provide
  • Comparable market research to support the appraised value
  • A completed written appraisal report you can submit alongside your registration paperwork
What we'll ask for: your VIN is required for every MTO / Service Ontario appraisal, and we'll also ask whether the vehicle has an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate (safety) — and if so, when it was done and the odometer reading at the time. This helps us document the vehicle accurately for registration purposes.
A note on in-person requirements: most Get Appraisal reports are completed entirely from the photos and details you submit online. Ontario's Ministry of Finance appraisal framework for registration/RST purposes can, in some cases, call for the vehicle to be physically inspected by a recognized appraiser. Tell us your situation when you request a quote and we'll confirm up front whether your appraisal can be completed remotely or needs a brief in-person step — before you pay anything.
FAQ

Questions about MTO / Service Ontario Vehicle Appraisal

Will Service Ontario accept an independent appraisal instead of the guide value?
It depends on your specific situation — this option generally exists for vehicles that are not listed in the guide, or that are excessively used or damaged relative to the guide's average wholesale value. We'll ask a few questions up front to confirm whether an independent appraisal applies before you request a report.
Do I still need a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP)?
In most private sales, yes — a UVIP is still required. An independent appraisal is a separate document used in specific situations (like family gift transfers or specified-vehicle cases) and doesn't automatically replace the UVIP. If you're not sure which documents you need, tell us the situation and we'll point you in the right direction.
How is the appraised value calculated?
We review the vehicle's specifications, mileage, condition (from your photos and description), and comparable vehicles currently or recently on the market in Ontario, then document our conclusion with the supporting evidence.
How fast can I get my report?
Standard MTO / Service Ontario appraisals are typically completed within 1-2 business days of us receiving complete information and photos.
